Texts: Puntos de partida. An Invitation to Spanish. 8th ed., Knorre, Dorwick, et al.
Supplementary Materials to accompany Puntos de partida. 7th ed., by Foerster & Miller.
Online laboratory manual to accompany Puntos de partida. 8th ed., by Sabló-Yates.

Course Description:
The prerequisite is Spanish 1001, placement, or permission from the department.
This is an elementary course with emphasis on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Classroom instruction is conducted in Spanish and consists primarily of oral and listening activities that put into practice vocabulary and grammatical structures. Lab attendance is required throughout the course. Assessment instruments include short written quizzes, compositions, homework, online lab and supplementary materials exercises, recorded dialogues, oral and written final exams.

Course objectives:
Oral proficiency will be promoted from the outset through the use of Spanish in class and the language lab. The student must demonstrate in class and lab activities, simple conversations, and the oral exam an ability to employ the vocabulary and grammar studied.

The student must demonstrate oral and written mastery of basic vocabulary and grammatical structures (communicative goals) introduced in chapters 7-14 of Puntos, including (but not limited to) direct and indirect object pronouns; the present indicative, preterite and imperfect tenses; the present and present perfect subjunctive; and the present perfect indicative.

Awareness and sensitivity to Hispanic culture will be promoted through the viewing of videos, and the reading and discussion of dialogues, paragraphs and short essays that introduce culturally authentic elements.
