Course Description:
The prerequisite is Spanish 1001, placement, or permission from the department.
This is an elementary course with emphasis on developing listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills.
Classroom instruction is conducted in Spanish and
consists primarily of oral and listening activities that
put
into practice
vocabulary and grammatical structures. Lab attendance
is required to complete recorded
activities.
Assessment instruments include short written quizzes,
compositions, homework, lab and supplementary materials exercises,
recorded dialogues, and oral and written final exams.
Course objectives:
Oral proficiency will be promoted from the outset through the use of
Spanish in class and the language lab.
The student must demonstrate in class and lab activities, simple conversations,
and the oral exam an ability
to apply the vocabulary and grammar studied.
The student must demonstrate in compositions and other written activities
an ability to apply the
basic vocabulary,
grammatical structures and communicative goals introduced in
chapters 7-14 of
Puntos, including (but not limited to)
direct and indirect object
pronouns;
the present indicative, preterite and imperfect tenses; the present
and present perfect subjunctive;
and the present perfect indicative.
Awareness and sensitivity to Hispanic culture will be promoted
through
the reading and discussion
of dialogues, paragraphs and short essays

If a student's absences exceed two, s/he will be dropped from
the class with a WF.
Two tardies or two days of partial attendance are equal to one absence.
Please turn off cell phones before entering the classroom.
Please do not leave and return during class. Each class will include a 15 minute break.
Please bring textbook and Supplementary Materials to class each day. Failure to do so will lower daily grade.
Because of its shortened format (6 weeks instead of 13), students must be
prepared to study for this course
many
more hours daily (much more intensively) than during a normal semester. If your
school/work/family
schedule doesn't
allow you several hours a day of study time, please consider taking SPAN 1002
during the normal school year instead
of the summer.
The student is responsible for reading and following the guidelines of the Academic
Integrity Policy
(2006-2008 Undergraduate Bulletin, p.
81-83). Violations of this policy will result in a zero for
the assignment in
question and the possibility of additional disciplinary action at the
institutional level.
