Journal Description
This journal is
dedicated to the military and strategic game theory models so well
investigated and popularized by von Neumann. Of particular
interest to the journal are articles relating to the Guerillas vs.
Police model and the Strategic Missile Defense model (both in the text,
Chapter 5). Other macro models (mutually assured destruction) or
micro models (small unit engagements, counterterrorism) are also
welcome.

Research Questions
Please consider
writing a paper that addresses any of the following topics. Also,
you may make up a good question related to these or other topics and
submit a paper.
- Guerrillas vs. Police (Basic
Model):
Verify the entries in the matrix in the text (p. 29). [Level
1 for each 5 entries verified -- may (should?!) be done in
teams]
- Guerrillas vs. Police (Force
Multiplier): Analyze several versions of the game (like the
analysis summarized on p. 29 for the basic model) when police units
may be spent on an engineering battalion to reinforce one or both
armories. Recall, an engineering battalion working at a post
doubles the defender capacity of those stationed there. For now,
only two units (one for each post) can be purchased by the police.
[Level 2 for each 5 entries
verified -- may (should?!) be done in teams]
- Guerrillas vs. Police (Spies):
Analyze several versions of the game (like the analysis summarized on
p. 29 for the basic model) when police units may be spent on
espionage. Recall, one unit of espionage improves the chances of
the police defending the correct post from 1/2 to 2/3. A second
unit of espionage improves it from 2/3 to 5/6. For now, no additional
expenditures on espionage can improve the defense. [Level
2 for each 5 entries verified -- may (should?!) be done in
teams]
- Guerrillas vs. Police (Force
Multiplier & Spies): Analyze several versions of the game (as
above) when police units may be spent on up to engineering battalions
or two spies. [Level 3 for
each 5 entries verified -- may (should?!) be done in teams]
- Guerrillas vs. Police (3 or more
armories): Analyze several versions of a several-base game.
Begin with no spying and/or force multipliers. Gradually add in
spying and/or force multipliers, and note any trends.
[Level 3 for each 5 entries
verified, Level 3 for any general
theorems about how best to defend multiple posts -- may (should?!) be
done in teams]
- Missile defense: Do an
analysis the improves upon the reality of Game 5.4 (p. 30) by (a)
adding more warheads and interceptors, (b) by increasing the
scan/search capabilities of the interceptors, or (c) allowing dual
(multiple) warheads per missile that divide into mini-warheads just
before the interceptor scans them. [Level 2
for each 3 basic games analyzed, Level 3
for each 3 advanced games analyzed.]
