Infusing Southeast Asian Studies
into the Undergraduate Curriculum
2000 - Summer Institute

Asian Studies Development Program

The Program

The Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) brings together the resources of the University of Hawai'i and the East-West Center.  The goal of the ASDP is to help faculty of U.S. undergraduate institutions of higher learning develop the knowledge base and acquire reference materials and techniques to effectively teach Asian Studies.  ASDP conducts annual Summer Institutes on Infusing Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum, Korean Culture and Society, and NEH Sponsored Institutes on Asian Cultures and Civilizations.
The Summer 2000 Infusing Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum Institute focused on the ten countries of Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and Philippines.  The stated goals of this Institute were:  "
                1.  Emphasize the cultural traditions and social structures of Southeast Asia.

                2.  Expand the participants' overall understanding of contemporary Southeast Asia.

                3.  Expand the participants' knowledge of curriculum resources on Southeast Asia.

                4.  Assist participants in developing curriculum materials on Southeast Asia.

                5.  Develop a professional network of educators dedicated to expanding Southeast Asian Studies content at American colleges and universities."

I can report that ASDP admirably fulfilled their first four stated goals.  The fifth goal requires the interest, effort, and cooperation of the Institute participants.  To that end, we, the participants, have established an email list and are staying in touch with one another.  This is written less than five weeks after the end of the Institute, so only time will tell if the fifth goal is met in the long term.
