Math 3110/6110 - Fall 08

New assignments are added at the top so they'll be easier to see.

All assignments and test date changes will be listed on this page.  You are responsible for checking it frequently.  Each assignment has a point value.  These points will be included in your participation grade. All future assignments will be graded on content as well as grammar. You should check my grammar notes on my homepage before beginning assignments. Be sure to put the assignment number or title, your name and the date due on each assignment.  They should be typed using 12-point font and double-spaced.

Final exams:  At NGCSU, no one is required to take 3 final exams in the same day.  If you have 3 and need to re-schedule mine, just talk to me and I'll be glad to work with you.
E-mail:  I encourage you to communicate with me via e-mail. Please include the class you're in for each e-mail you send (M3110 or "Geometry class").
Drop/Add Students:
Students who add the class after we have already met are responsible for finding out the information concerning the course via my website and for getting caught up on the material they have missed.  Please come by my office if you need any help with this.

Alternate credit:  Here's a way you can earn points (10) for your participation grade.  Check the cultural events calendar and attend a program.  Then write a brief reflection on what you attended and turn it in to me along with the program (if available) from the event. E-mail me if you have any questions.  These points may be used for a missed pop quiz.  Write-ups should be turned in within a week of the event or they will not be accepted.  More than one write-up will be accepted only in extreme cases.

Final Exam study guide:  Here's the link.

Extra credit:  All extra credit write-ups MUST be turned in by Tuesday, November 25th.  Thank you.

Test update!:  Several students in my T/R class have mentioned how swamped they are next week.  We talked about moving the test, but I thought that would be unfair for my M/W folks who wouldn't get enough notice.  So what I've decided to do is to drastically cut the amount of the material on the upcoming test and just move that material to the final exam.  We'll talk more about this next week.  We'll stop before all the area formulas we've been deriving, including the distance formula and its connection to the Pythagorean Theorem.  Hopefully this will help!

Assignment 8:  This is the out-of-class assignment you will do to replace class on Wednesday or Thursday.  Create polygons satisfying the given conditions on p. 265 in your activity book.  Then search for "Pick's Theorem" on the internet and be prepared to show how it works.  Then do the activity starting on p. 281.  Continue the activity all the way through the square root of 9.  Bring these activities (as well as the square you borrowed) to class on Monday or Tuesday, whichever day your class meets.

Study guide:  Please use this link for a study guide for Test 2.

Office:  I will not be in my office for regular office hours on Wednesday, the 12th or Thursday, the 13th, due to a conference.  I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

NGCSU Students,

In an effort to evaluate and improve academic advisement across the University, NGCSU conducts a survey each semester measuring student satisfaction with their advisement experience. As with the class evaluation survey, the survey is linked to each student through banner. The survey becomes active approximately two weeks after midterm each semester. Students should follow the following procedures to access the survey;

Student instructions:

1- Login to Banner, using NGCSU ID number and PIN.

2- Under the Main Menu select "Student & Financial Aid"

3- Under Student & Financial Aid menu, Click on the link "Student Rating of Advisor Survey" to access the survey.

As with the class evaluation survey, students will be required to either complete the survey or electronically opt out in order to access their final grades. Students who did not meet with an advisor still need to log in and state that they did not meet with an advisor.

As with the class survey, all responses will remain anonymous. Advisors will only have access to summary data related to specific advisors. No responses will be identified with any specific student.

Homework:  You can go ahead and start working on problems in section 10.2.  Also, MW people, don't forget to complete #5 on p. 270 in your activity book.  T/R folks, we'll start this in class on Thursday and you'll need to complete it by next Tuesday.  Also, please bring scotch tape to class again on Monday or Tuesday (depending on which class you're in).  If you have any extra cylindrical containers (oatmeal boxes, coffee tins) or small boxes, please bring them as well.  Lastly, if you have any old wrapping paper you'd like to get rid of, bring it.  If  not, please bring several sheets of construction paper.  Thanks a bunch!

Assignment 7:  Construct the following and bring them to class on Monday, the 3rd or Tuesday, the 4th (depending on which class you're in).  This assignment doesn't have a point value assigned, but it is required.  Manila folder material would be great or you can use poster board or even just construction paper.  Please make each shape at least as large as half a piece of paper - small ones will be difficult to use.  1)  A parallelogram that is not a rectangle, 2) Two congruent triangles that are not equilateral and 3) Two congruent trapezoids that are not isosceles. Also, please bring colored pencils.  Each group will need some tape, but you can share if you want to work that out.  Also, if you have scissors, you can bring them.   Thanks!

Class update:  Don't forget to work on problems in section 10.1.  Also, I have to attend a conference November 12-14th.  So the Wednesday and Thursday classes that week will have an OUT-OF-CLASS assignment.  Please don't tell folks I'm "calling off class."  But you can plan on your class activities being done out-of-class that day.  Just thought I'd go ahead and let you know.  Thanks!

Homework:  Don't forget to finish the trig worksheet in your activity book.  Also, find 6 round items around your house or dorm.  Make a table containing the name of each item and its distance around and across the middle of the item.  Use centimeters if possible.  Thanks!

Homework:  You can delete problem 20 in section 11.1.  Thanks!

Homework:  Please finish p. 174 in your activity book and then do p. 175.  We'll use this first thing in the next class.  Also, you can be working on problems in section 11.1 in your textbook.  The constructions assessment will be on Monday, the 20th or Tuesday, the 21st (depending on which class you're in).  This will count 25 points toward your participation grade.  Thanks!

Study guide:  For a study guide for Test 1, go to this link.

Assignment 6:  Please write a journal entry about class on Wednesday, Sept. 17th or Thursday, Sept. 18th (if you're absent, do one about a previous class).
Date due:  Monday, Sept. 22nd or Tuesday, Sept. 23rd
Point value:  5

Assignment 7:  Go to www.nctm.org and then to the "NCTM Standards."  Click on "Overview."  Go to "Geometry" and read the standards for the grade-levels of your area of interest.  Then click on the "E-examples" and look at the ones that apply to geometry.  Write a summary (see instructions above for papers) telling which grade level you picked and your impressions (not a summary of what's there).  This should be no more than one page in length!
Date due:  Wednesday, Sept. 24nd or Tuesday, Sept. 25th
Point value:  10

Assignment 5:  Please go to the following website and explore.  Try to do some of the same things you've done with Sketchpad.  Write a paragraph or so giving your impressions.  Was it easier than Sketchpad?  Do you think it could be useful in your future classroom?  What did you think about the site in general?  Then go to the next site and explore the tutorials.  Tell me if you think this would be user-friendly for you and/or your future students.

Assignment 4:  Do "Getting to Know Sketchpad - Tour 2" (starts on handwritten p. 4 in activity packet and is also repeated after p. 36) and "Introducing Angles" (starts on handwritten p. 13) with Geometer's Sketchpad.  Some of you may have already done Tour 2.  For the tour, you'll have to go to the R drive and open the "Math/CS" folder and then my folder, Math 3110 and then the tour.  Just print the last page of your activity to show me in class.  When you close the tour, click "NO" on "Save changes?"  For the angle one, just answer the questions (Q1, Q2,etc.) in the spaces provided.  Then do the "Simple Closed Figures" and "Exploring Quadrilaterals" activities that follow the repeat of Tour 2 after p. 36.  Just answer the questions in the blanks.  Again, don't save changes when you close out the activity.
Date due:  Monday, Sep. 8th or Tuesday, Sep. 9th
Point value:  15

Assignment Due Dates:  These dates are given for both of my classes this semester.  You can tell which is yours based on the day of the week it's due.  Thanks!

Assignment 3:  Go to this website and explore the Banana Hunt game.  http://www.gamequarium.com/geometry.html  Write a paragraph about what you thought about the site.
Date due:  Tuesday, Sept. 2nd or Wednesday, Sept. 3rd
Point value:  5

Assignment 1:  Read the "Pet Peeves" from my homepage. Print the calendar and syllabus and bring it to class with you.  Be familiar with the policy on homework assignments and how to access homework problems.  Let me know if you have any questions.
Date due:  Monday, August 25th or Tuesday, August 26th.

Assignment 2:  Do "Getting to Know Sketchpad - Tour 1."  Print the page when you're finished.  Skip "Tour 2" and go to the "Quick Reference Guide" - work through this, but you don't have to print anything.  Go to "Introducing Points, Segments . . . "  As you work through this answer the questions (Q1, Q2, etc.) on the pages in the space provided - just hand-write them.  Bring the page you printed from Tour 1 and these answers to class.  It's o.k. to answer the questions on the same sheets as the activity.  I'll give them back to you so that you can put them back in your activity book.
Date due:  Wednesday, August 27th or Thursday, August 28th
Point value:  10

Quiz 1:  Covers syllabus, calendar, pet peeves, etc.
Date:  Tuesday, September 2nd or Wednesday, September 3rd
