Course Evaluation

Online Participation:

Students are required to complete discussions online each week.  Topics and discussion questions will be posted from Sunday to Sunday on VISTA.  Students will post on the discussion questions proposed in the weekly unit Learning Activities or directed by faculty and must demonstrate reading of the textbook materials and other posted materials as well as individual research on the topics presented.  Students will complete one original posting per week and respond to a minimum of one other student’s posting or at least two postings per week.  The postings must not be back to back (for example, 12:01 am Monday and 12:04 am Monday).  A response to another student’s posting of “I agree” is not considered an adequate posting but should give some qualifying feedback to the response indicating comprehension, agreement or disagreement, and why.  A total of 11 weekly units will be presented during the semester. The units will be open for one week at a time and then will be turned off. Online participation represents 20% of your course grade.

The postings will be graded by the following criteria:

Quality of the original responses                                                              20%

Adequate research and reading associated with the posting             20%

Quality of the postings to other students’ responses                            20%

Appropriate rationale to student responses                                            20%

Critique of student presentations                                                             20%

Article Critiques

Students are to complete three (3) article critiques during the semester on various political or policy problems that relate to nursing.  The articles should be from appropriate health policy journals or websites that correlate with course materials.  The textbook gives many appropriate health policy websites as do each unit of study on VISTA.  The articles should be ones that are not included in the unit study materials.  The format for the article critiques are as follows:

Include the author, name of article, and journal or reference for each article at the beginning.

20%                Identification of the policy issue and nursing implications

20%                Key points/arguments by the author

20%                Pros and cons of the policy issue or problem

20%                What three things did you learn from this article

20%                Critique the article as to your findings on this topic

The article critiques (3) will represent 15% of your grade.  Dates that these are due are posted on the calendar and the critique will not be accepted after the deadline without prior faculty discussion.  The critiques should be sent via VISTA e-mail as an attachment.

Due dates for article critiques:  August 31, September 21, & October 26 by 5:00 pm.
