COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A survey course designed to increase the RN student’s awareness and understanding of the changes occurring in professional nursing practice and concepts that influence delivery of nursing care.  The philosophy and conceptual framework of the Nursing Curriculum at North Georgia College and State University which is based on the Great Eight concepts provide the structure for the course content.  The Great Eight concepts include: health promotion/disease prevention; communication; analytical, contextual and holistic thinking; human caring and relationships; teaching; resource management; leadership, and information literacy.  Course content focuses on socialization of the professional nurse, nursing theory, written and oral communication and ethics in nursing practice.  Critical thinking is used to examine nursing theorists/theories and the application of theory to practice.

NURS 3110 is a writing and oral intensive course.  This indicates that there will be extensive writing requirements and one classroom oral presentation required of each student.  The majority of this course is on-line, but attendance will be mandatory for the presentations.  The calendar will reflect the assigned day of on-campus attendance requirements during the semester.  Students will be expected to come to campus on the day that they are assigned to present only.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1.     Describe the philosophy, purposes, outcomes, and conceptual framework of the BSN program.

2.     Apply specific nursing and other theoretical formulations to clinical practice.

GUIDELINES FOR THEORIST’S PAPER

Please select a nursing theorist from your textbook or other source that is interesting to you and that you want to study more in-depth.  Please note that it must be a nursing theorist – Maslow is not a nursing theorist although used heavily in nursing).    You may use your textbooks and other resources to gather your material.  There are many websites available on nursing theorists and books in the library. You may also order materials via Interlibrary Loan at our NGCSU library.  The Reference Desk is willing to assist you with your needs.  Apply this theory to a client situation and analyze the situation according to the theory, describing the four concepts studied in nursing – client, environment, health and nursing/care.  Please let your faculty member know who you select.

Guidelines for Issue Paper and Presentation

Selecting an Issue

There are many issues in nursing today.  A suitable subject for your paper and presentation may be social, political, educational, economic, psychological, or cultural in nature and related to nursing and health care.  Think about what concerns you most about your work, nursing, and health care.  Select an issue that you would like to examine in greater depth.  Your reference to the issue should be professional and may be local or international in scope.  Research your issue in journals, newspapers, the web but appropriate sites.

An issue is a matter about which intelligent, informed people disagree.  An issue often generates strong emotional responses among people who hold different points of view.  Take a stand in the issue that you study – for or against.  Every student will choose a different topic.  Please let the faculty know your topic for approval (1st come, 1st serve) to make sure that the topics are not being duplicated.  The only time that a topic can be chosen by two students is if one student takes the “yes” side and another takes the “no” side creating an informal debate.

Issue Clarification

Express your issue in writing (or in your presentation).  By externalizing it, you can further examine, clarify, and refine your wording.  Express the issue in the “Is…?” “Does…?” or “Should …?” form.  The issue can be answered by a yes or no (for example, Should nurses be required to have continuing education credits for re-licensure? – yes or no? Or Do 12- hour shifts work schedules contribute to medication errors? – yes or no?)   You take a stand on the affirmative or negative and support it.

Distinguish between the central issue and peripheral issues.

Issue Development

Define the key terms and concepts.

Describe the context of your issue.

Identify your assumptions.  What are you taking for granted?

Develop your issue – what is the issue and why is it an issue?

Reasons and Conclusions

To resolve the issue means to choose a conclusion, belief, or point of view that you believe to be the most reasonable in response to your issue.

Construct your reasons and determine how you will present them to lead to your conclusion.

Support your reasons with relevant data, evidence, experience, and other information.

Acknowledge alternative points of view and prepare a defense for each anticipated objection.

Applications

Discuss the Implications of your position and how does this correlate with nursing.  What positive and negative consequences might result?

Reference List

A reference list is required.  Use the APA format.

A minimum of 3 references must be used that are appropriate and current (no more than 5 years old in journals).

Grading for paper

This issue paper is 25% of your final grade for the course.    Paper must be typed, double-spaced.  Grading criteria is as follows:

            Issue clarification                                        10%

            Issue development                                     20%

            Reasons and Conclusions                          30%

            Implications                                                 20%

            Style, readability, clarity,                        20%

            spelling, punctuation, APA,

            references

The paper should be no more than 10 pages in length.  A cover page and abstract are expected to be included.

The presentation that each student gives this semester is on the issues topic.  One date is given to students to attend class for presentations. A date will be assigned to you.  We will begin on the Tuesday assigned at 9:00 and go until the students assigned that day have finished.  Attendance on campus this assigned date is mandatory. The guidelines are as follows:

A quality presentation includes: 20 minutes in length

1.       References

2.       Adequate research

3.       NO READING of material

4.       Involvement of audience

5.       Audiovisuals

6.       Organization of thoughts, nice flow to the presentation

Postings/Discussions on-line:

The calendar on VISTA will give students the reading assignments for the units, how long the units will last (some cover two weeks).  The student is responsible for reading the course materials on each unit, completing the learning activities, and posting twice a week under the Discussions section of VISTA.  The learning activities are for the student’s learning and are not required to be turned into faculty unless indicated.  The postings should not be back to back – for example, should not be: Tuesday, 12:05 pm and the same day 12:09pm.  Units will open on Tuesday and the first posting should be on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.  The second posting should be on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.  The postings should be two different times during the week to allow you time to read other students’ responses and to assimilate and critique what other students are saying.  At least one of the postings per week should be an original response such as an answer to one of the questions in the unit or a response to what the faculty member has asked students to post and include a reference/rationale for your original posting.  The second or more should be replies to what other students have said.  A response of “I agree” is not considered a valid response.  You may agree but give the rationale behind your views – the reasoning.  You may have found an interesting article on a topic to share with the audience – feel free to give us websites to view.  The postings are not intended to be long but should be meaningful and to the point.  You will be reading many responses and long-winded postings lose all of us!  More does not mean better.

The week runs Tuesday (12:01 am) to Monday (midnight) for this course and the unit will be cut off at the end of the week or two weeks. Check your VISTA calendar! The calendar will list the dates of the units.  You are able to click on the materials through the date.

E-mails to faculty are preferably done through the VISTA e-mail.

Grading criteria for postings/discussions:

Posting on time and appropriate number                       20%

Quality of original thoughts with supporting data          20%

Quality of responses to other students                            20%

Validation/critique of responses                                       20%

Conciseness of views – to the point                                20%

We have VISTA Help desks available to you should you experience technology problems or need to reset a password.  If you are not familiar with VISTA, we encourage you to practice navigating around the site and familiarizing yourself with its features.  Basic computer skills are required to take a course on-line and access to a computer and Internet providers.    This course is not intended to teach a student computer skills.
