Course Description:  Prerequisite:  none.  An introduction to Hispanic culture and to the fundamentals of hearing, speaking, reading and writing Spanish.  Designed for those who have never studied Spanish before or who need a review.  Active classroom use of the language.  Language laboratory assignments.  Not open to native speakers.  Spanish 1002 or higher strongly recommended for highly proficient speakers of Spanish.

Course Objectives:  Oral proficiency will be promoted from the outset through the use of Spanish in class.  The student must demonstrate the ability to use the vocabulary and grammar studied through oral and written class exercises, simple structured conversations, and oral and written exams.

Methods of Instruction:  In class practice through individual and group work of vocabulary and grammar presented in the textbook.  Professor will provide additional explanation when needed, and engage students in written and spoken work.  Lab work required to improve listening and speaking skills.

Academic Integrity:  You are expected to be familiar with and follow the academic integrity policy of the university as outlined in the NGCSU catalogue.  Putting your name on work that was produced or written by someone else including translators available on the internet or through computer software is a violation of this policy.  I reserve the right to use Google and other internet sources to verify originality of student work. You should do your own work.  You may study together but may not turn in the same work.  Violations of this policy will result in a zero for everyone involved for the assignment in question and the possibility of additional disciplinary action at the institutional level.

Students with Disabilities:    Disabilities and Accommodations.  North Georgia College and State University is committed to equal access to its programs, services and activities for people with disabilities.  If you believe that you have a disability requiring an accommodation, reasonable prior notice needs to be given to the instructor and the Office of Student Disability Resources.  Contact Elizabeth McIntosh, Coordinator, Student Disability Resources at 122 Barnes Hall, 867-2782, emcintosh@ngcsu.edu.

ACTFL Standards:  Spanish 1001 contributes to the development of the following ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages) standards and sub-standards:  Communication - 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3; Cultures- 2.2; Connections - 3.1and 3.2; Comparisons - 4.1 and 4.2.  A detailed list of ACTFL standards is on file in my office.

Class Evaluations:  Class evaluations at NGCSU are conducted on-line through Banner.  Evaluation of the class is considered a component of the course and students will not be permitted to access their course grade until the evaluation has been completed.  The evaluations will be accessible beginning one week prior to Final Exam week.

Attendance:

· 4 permitted absences.

· On the 5th absence you will be dropped with a WF.

· 2  tardies or leaving class early twice, sleeping, and/or not having your textbook with you twice will result in an absence.

· Weddings, leaving early for vacation (including prepurchased airline tickets), appointments with academic advisors, study groups, etc. are not excused absences.

Missed Work:

You must present documentation for excused university-sponsored activities and for other excused absences (sickness, death in the immediate family, etc.)  in order to make-up any missed work.  You have one week from the day you missed to make up the work, otherwise it becomes a zero.  Quizzes or work taken up for a participation grade cannot be made up for any reason.

Cell phones:  Phones should be turned off before entering class.  If it rings or you text in class, you will be asked to leave and that will count as one absence.
