1. The conditions of many prisons that gave rise to uprisings and lawsuits centered around the "quality of life" for inmates, usually circumscribed by three aspects: order, amenities, and service. In those prisons that experienced uprisings and etc., those aspects of "quality of life" are lacking, ie:
(a) No order: Killings
and assaults were common
(b) No amenities: There needed
to be more coffee and less cockroaches
(c) No service: Program and
work opportunities were poor and needed to be more predictable
2. The easiest of the three aspects of the quality of prison life to measure is order because it can be judged by levels of violence ie rapes, assaults homicides, riots . High officer turnover is symptomatic of disorder.
3. Prison officials in decades past maintained discipline among inmates through heavy-handed measures which included arbitrary punishment. The result of arbitrary punishment is low violence and high fear and tension.
4. The following are the three variables that could be considered as the highest contributors to prison violence:
(a) Characteristics of the inmate population, (b) the Level of crowding, and (c) the level of inmate treatment
5. Does increased prison funding equal less violence? When examining prison violence in past decades in correlation with funding and expenditures one point seems consistent: Greater order was achieved where less money was being spent.
6. Is inmate to staff ratio lower among orderly prisons? Not necessarily, research shows that prisons with the highest inmate-to-staff ratios have been the most orderly. Why? management philosophy
7. How does the level of officer training effect order levels? According to Duillo, the more formal training is elaborated on, the more the control of inmates seems to slip from the administration's fingertips.
8. Explain the relationship between prison violence and the state of inmate society as viewed by the sociologist?
Prison violence is a product of the administration's attempts to tighten up discipline, run things by the book, or make it more difficult for inmates to behave as they wish or to associate freely.
9. During the early eighties, Texas had lower levels of disorder than Michigan and California. One plausible explanation for this might be that Texas has been far less accommodating of inmate society and its leaders than the other two states.
10. What are the conflicting aspects of the quality prison life from a sociological perspective.
Greater order can be purchased only at the cost of less amenity and
service. For example, in order to create an educational
environment, you must de-emphasize formal administrative controls
over inmates. But the Texas model refutes that. Also the model
in Texas shows the shops were clean beehives of productivity while the
shops in other prisons were centers of idleness and disorder.
