Welcome to my homepage for NGCSU.   I am currently an assistant professor of political        science in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, I joined the department in        the Fall of 2007.

       BACKGROUND

I was originally born in Akron, OH and obtained my high school education at Archbishop Hoban High School, graduating in 1988.  I then moved to the University of Akron where I obtained my B.A. and M.A. in Political Science with a focus on international relations and comparative politics.  Moving on to Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA I achieve my doctorate in political science.  My two areas of focus are international relations and comparative with an emphasis on international relations theory, European politics, European Union and integration issues, defense and security policy of the United States and Europe, and federalism within the EU.  My dissertation entitled “Integration and Cooperation: Application to the European Union” focused on using the theory of international relations to explain the integration of the European Union.

I have been at several institutions and taught a wide variety of courses before coming to North Georgia.  I was adjunct faculty at the University of Akron and Walsh University, Visiting Asst Professor at Central Michigan University, and Asst Professor at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.  Course taught prior to coming NGCSU include; Western European Politics, International relations, World Politics, American Government, Research Methods, Comparative Foreign Policy, American Foreign Policy, Democracy and Democratization, Comparative Politics, Western Europe 1945-Present, European Politics, Global Studies, Politics of Developing Nations, International Security, Britain and the Commonwealth, Intro to Political Thought, Modern Political Thought, and graduate seminars in Comparative Politics and Intergovernmental Relations.

Other professional activities include working for the College Board in a number of positions related to Advanced Placement American Government.   I served as a reader for both the AP American Government and AP Comparative Politics tests.  For the last three years I have served as a table leader for the AP American Government reading.    For most of 2007 I was a syllabi reviewer for AP American Government classes taught at the high school level.   I have also previously been a reader for the S.A.T. exam.

NORTH GEORGIA

My role at North Georgia College and State University is to teach political science and international affairs courses.    I will be teaching American Government and Global Issues courses at the introductory level.   For the international affairs major I cover the European area of emphasis.   At the present time there are three courses that fall into that area including Introduction to the European Union, Western European Politics, and European Security.     Other upper division courses that I will teach include International Relations Theory and Comparative Government.

I have recently been appointed to a course development team for “Transatlantic Relations and Global Security”;  one of the new online courses in the upcoming Transatlantic Major.

My hobbies include watching sports particularly the Pittsburgh Steelers, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and Cleveland Indians.  Reading military history, science fiction, and fantasy.    I am also a serious wargamer having been involved in that for close to 25 years. I try and attend as many gaming conventions as possible a year.  Currently my focus is on Warhammer Fantasy (dwarfs), Warhammer 40K (space marines), as well as board games and other types of historical miniatures.  I am also part of the control team for the National Security Decision Making Game which is a simulation of contemporary international politics.   NSDM has also created a Cold War simulation variant.     My role as a member of the control team is to help run the game as well as helping to build and update the underlying simulation.   For more information go to the website which can be found at NSDMG.org
